The 3 Step Quick Start: (minimum reading section)
1.) Go to the Settings & Preferences page via the File menu, or by clicking the "Settings" button on the Issue List page. Once there, enter your CompuServe User ID and Password, under the "Connections" heading. Click the "Modem Setup..." button and select the modem communication parameters for your hardware in the dialog. Don't forget to insert your local CompuServe phone number in this dialog.
2.) Go to the Issue List page via the File menu or by clicking on the button with arrow in the upper right hand corner of the Set-Up and Preferences page. Click the "Manual Dial" button or type Command - 'D', and TickerTracker™ will connect to CompuServe, retrieve quotes, sort them, color code them and graph the information. (For Automatic Downloading data retrieval at pre-set times, read the Further Details section below on "Issue Download Frequency")
3.) That's it !!!
If all goes well, in less than a minute you should have your first download (if not see 'Trouble Shooting' below).
To view an Issue's graph, enter personal Issue notes and/or position information, simply click on the Issue's name in the Issue list display. Remember, you have to download twice before you can view an issue graph.

Welcome to TickerTracker™
What is TickerTracker™?
TickerTracker™ is a stock/fund tracking tool for any Mac or MAC OS user who follows the Stock and Mutual Funds Markets. It is designed to appeal to both the "Active Investors" who wants to follow fluctuations in Issue prices throughout the trading day, as well as the "Casual Observer" of price trends. TickerTracker™ does the work of updating the prices of issues in your portfolio; issues you may have targeted for purchase or issues you are just watching to accumulate or unload.
Most important to all investors is the ability to set a "Warning" price value for any or all Issues, and have your computer alert you, through a voice and/or visual warnings, that your issue has reached a critical price level. TickerTracker™ is designed to keep you on top of things whether your difficulty is in not having the time every day to review and analyze published trends, or whether as a active investor you monitor so many stocks that following fine-tuned fluctuations poses a problem.
What do I need to use TickerTracker™?
System requirements:
• Macintosh - with a 680x0 or PowerPC processor , or Mac OS computer.
• System 7.0 or later
• 3 MB of free RAM memory
• 3 MB of hard disk space.
• 256 colors (thousands preferred)
• Connection Tools: Apple Modem Tool v 1.5.3
• Modem: Hayes compatible modem, or GeoPort Telecom Adapter with Apple Express Modem.
• A CompuServe account: To retrieve data you will need a CompuServe ID and Password to access the on-line service.
What other software should I have?
• Text to Speech (PlainTalk™ extensions) are required for the Voice Warning system to work properly.
Included in the TickerTracker™ folder is "Okey Dokey", a useful extension if you would like to take advantage of unattended daily tracking. This control panel will "click" the default button of any dialog box that appears on your screen. This is important, because there may be a busy phone, a connection problem or an interruption during a data download. Although TickerTracker™ is programmed to retry after a failed download, it can not automatically answer connection-related error dialogs. "Okey Dokey" will perform this function.
Warning: "Okey Dokey" is a system level control panel; it therefore affects all dialog boxes (even those related to other applications, or your system). We know this is a work-around solution; look for this type of functionality to be self-contained in a future version.
DETAILED EXPLANATIONS:
Menu Bar
1.) Navigation
TickerTracker™ provides at least three methods for navigation: the menu bar, command/arrow keys and screen buttons.
2.) Import/Export
The Import/Export menu items are designed to be used as a means to exporting your price data, portfolio positions, warning bar settings and list of tickers in the event of a TickerTracker™ update or a mishap. You may also export issue price data as text to use in a spread sheet application.
3.) Warnings menu
The Warnings menu is automatically updated after each download and contains the names of all Issues that are currently showing a warning.
4.) Helper
Turning the "Helper" on, will display a help line of text at the bottom of the window. The help text is sensitive to mouse position, much like balloon help, except you must pause for >2 seconds to get the help line to appear. TickerTracker™ will run slightly faster with Helper turned off. We advise you turn on the help when you initially browse through TickerTracker™.
Settings & Preferences
A. Connections
Use the "Modem Setup..." button to access the connections settings of the communications tool installed on your computer (e.g. Apple Modem Tool or Express Modem Tool)
The "Time-out Duration" options govern the amount of time allotted for a download, before a potential connection problem is assessed and the data retrieval is aborted. Select a short time-out if you are running TickerTracker™ on a fast CPU (68040 or PPC) based Macintosh with a fast (14,400 or better) modem. A medium time-out should be selected if you have a fast CPU, and a slow modem. Choose the "Long" time-out option if both your CPU, and your modem are very slow. (Fast is the default - try it first)
B. Downloads
1.) Frequency
Select the download frequency via the PopUp menu under the "Downloads" heading, and then set the Start Time and End Time applicable, remembering to account for the time zone of the markets you are tracking. Choose "Auto-load OFF" if you want to initiate data downloads manually. Use the "Manual Download" button on the Issue List page or "Download Quotes" in the File menu to manually start the quotes retrieval process.
2.) Clear Data Each Morning / Display Previous Data
This determines the "longevity" of your graphed data. The "Clear data" option is for reviewing a day's data at a time. This option will remove all previously downloaded data and start a new Issue graph at the beginning of each calendar day. When 'Clear Data' is selected, you may choose to either clear the graphed data immediately or to clear current data at the start of the following day. If the "Display Previous Data" option is selected, you can graph price movement over one or more days. TickerTracker™ will continue the next day's graph where the previous day's graph left off.
Note:
With either option, the issue data you entered regarding Entry price, Number of issues, Warning Bar Values and any personal Notes, remains untouched.
3.) The "Color Quotes Lines" option allows you the choose between a Black & White or Color display of the retrieved data on the Issue list page. In color mode, the advancing issues are colored green, the evens are colored blue and the declining issues are colored red. If "Color" is not selected, all data is displayed white on a black background. This is helpful for with monochrome monitors. Note: If you want to print the Issue list page in color, you must choose to display in Color, update the data and then print.
C. Options
1.) Bringing TickerTracker™ to the front
TickerTracker™ is designed to allow you to work, while it is monitoring the Markets in the background. Choosing between these options tells TickerTracker™ when to interrupt you (if at all) with an update, or with the news that one of your monitored issues has crossed your pre-set critical price ("Warning Bar") value. If you are using Okey Dokey for unattended retrievals, we recommend that you select the "Before" option, so that Okey Dokey can answer any error dialog, otherwise Okey Dokey will attempt to answer a dialog that is in the background which will have unpredictable effects on the current (foremost) application. (Default is 'Before')
2.) Warnings with Voice
When you select this option, and after a data update, a downloaded Issue price causes a warning, the selected PlainTalk™ voice will speak a warning at the speed specified. Example of the spoken text would be, "Apple Computer, at 22 1/2, up 1 1/4". This feature is very useful if you need to do other things away from the computer but are within ear shot. (Default is OFF)
3.) Brokers Fees:
Using the "Auto enter Brokers Fees" option allows you to automatically enter a "Flat Fee" or a fixed "Percent" of the total value of the purchase in the ACB Fee data field of the issues with positions in your sets. If you are a frequent trader and/or use Discount brokers with flat fees, this option is useful.
4.) Auto delete unused stock graphs at quitting
This cleans up the application, by deleting unwanted data, if and when you remove issues from your portfolios or other lists. We recommend that you do this from time to time in order to keep your application from being bloated with data on issues you're no longer interested in. Clearing out the application from time to time will improve performance. (Default is OFF)
5.) Auto Export at Quit
This option allows you to automatically export a TickerTracker™ file when quitting. This export file serves as a backup of all your data, and can be imported into TickerTracker™ in case of a mishap.
Select "to TT folder" to direct all backup export files to the TickerTracker™ folder.
6.) "Click" for sound
When selected, this option allows your computer to play a "click" sound every time a button is selected, providing an audio cue.
7.) Use the red square button with the gold triangle in the upper left corner of the Portfolio page to navigate to any Set and its issues. Selecting a Set's name will navigate you to its portfolio page otherwise selecting an issue within the Set's menu will take you to the issue's graph.
D. Graphs
1.) Issue Graphs
Choose the line color and opacity for the price data graphics on the individual Issue Graph pages.
2.) For Analysis Graphs, use the (number of) "Periods" popUp menu, under the "Graphs" heading, to select the data interval to be used for computing the Stochastics and the Rate of Change of Price (ROC-Price) analyses (see formulas below).
3.) You may also select the color of the bars of the ROC-Price (rate of change of price) by using the "Bars" popup menu.
4.) Select the "Average OBV (On Balance Volume)" to activate a nine(9) period smoothing of this indicator (see formulas below).
5.) The "Mark first quote or day" option provides for a graphic marking of the first download, as selected (Circle or Dot), to provide a quick visual reference point for the day's price fluctuations.
6.) The "Graph purchase price" option will display the entry price for an Issue as a green "horizon line" on the Issue's graph for a quick visual reference of the current profit/loss trend. (Default is ON)
7.) The "Label Last" option will display the numerical value of the last traded price on the Issue graph, as well as the last percentage change in price on the analysis graph. Use these for quick visual references if needed.
8.) You may choose to "Include Brokers Fees in portfolio data" by selecting this option, to graphically reflect the ACB or Average Cost Basis of the issues in your portfolio. When selected, your portfolio data will include the data entered in the ACB Fees data fields of each issue in the Set.
9.) The line color of the "Variance" of a portfolio graph can be customized by clicking on the color button to get the popup menu for the "Plot Line Color" option.
10.) The graph of the portfolio variance can also be customized by changing the "Vertical Line Spacing" of the display. This option allow you to select the number of days/data points (i.e. "Line Interval" ) between each vertical line drawn on the portfolio variance graph. You may choose one(1) as you enter a new portfolio position, but after 60 days of data you may want to adjust as you see fit.
Issue List (page)
1.) Sorting Issues
The Issue List page displays the standard issue data as received from the most recent CompuServe download. The issues are arranged in Sets, separated by a dotted line with the Set's name as the title. These Sets correspond to the Set groupings and order as setup on the Tickers page.
The default mode sorts the issues within each Sets by "Δ Price" (i.e. change in price since yesterday's close). You can alter the sort parameter of the Issue List Page by clicking on any of the column headings; e.g. selecting "Issue Name" will sort the issues within each Set alphabetically by Issue name. The button at the top right of the "List Options" field in the upper right, will switch the sort between descending and ascending order.
2.) List Options and Navigation
The radio buttons in the List Options box, allows you to selectively view sub-groups of Issues based on their current status. These lists may be sorted in the same manner (selecting column titles) as the full list. An "*" at the end of any Issue line indicates a news report in 'Business News' (Forum: ENS) in CompuServe. To navigate to the Issue Graph page for any of the displayed issues, just click on the desired Issue's line. Remember, you have to download twice before you can view an issue graph. The maximum number of tickers displayed on the Issue List page is about 360.
3.) Download Times
The time of the Last download and time for the Next Download are displayed in their respective boxes. The Total Download figures represents the total download time for the current day, followed by the duration of the last download in brackets to the right. CompuServe rounds up each download time to the nearest minute for billing purposes, therefore the TickerTracker™ time display is CompuServe's "rounded" time.
All price data retrieved from CompuServe is delayed by 15 minutes, the last traded "time" of an issue can be viewed in the "Last: x:xxpm" field, and is displayed by selecting and keeping the mouse depressed on an individual issue line.
To the right of the "Last: x:xxpm" field, the date of the last download is displayed in "mm/dd" format.
4.) The "Manual Download" button executes a non-scheduled download of Issue price data. Using this button does not affect the scheduled automatic downloads as setup on the Settings page.
5.) Use the "Go to Portfolio" button to open the popup menu to navigate to the Portfolio of choice. You will be asked to enter your password once, unless you quit TickerTracker™ or activate the privacy screen on any Issue graph page.
6.) The "Tickers" button navigates you to the Tickers page. There you will be able to setup the issues and Sets you choose to track.
7.) The "Settings" button will navigate you to the Settings & Preferences page where you will be able to customize your copy of TickerTracker™.
8.) The UP and Down elevator buttons at the lower right of the issue list will scroll up/down (if you hold down the mouse) or page up/down if you just click on either button.
Issue graph (pages)
1.) Navigation:
The three "arrow" buttons at the top right of the Graph Pages allow you to navigate from one Issue graph page to another within a Set. Clicking the RIGHT or LEFT arrow buttons take you to the next or previous Issue graph page in alphabetical order. Holding the mouse down continuously on either the left or right arrow button, allows fast paging through the Issues in a Set.
2.) Privacy Screen:
TickerTracker™ comes with a privacy screen to mask your current portfolio position and issue notes while still allowing you to view the graphed data. To add or remove the privacy screen, click on the small button (in upper left) of the blue area. Also, to view your personal issue data, you will need to enter your password (as entered on the Settings page), once per session; or each time you re-activate the privacy screen during a session.
3.) Entering a Position:
To enter a "Position" for an issue, you must first remove the privacy screen (see above). Then input the number of shares bought and the price per share in their respective fields, then hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard. Keying the Enter key will cause TickerTracker™ to calculate your current position for the Issue. You may also enter the Broker/Transaction fees for the purchase and sale of an issue, to define the ACB (Average Cost Basis) when calculating the profit/loss status of the issue. These ACB Fees can be entered separately for each issue or automatically by selecting the "auto" option on the Settings page. By selecting the "incl" option for the ACB Fees (on the issue's graph page), the Profit/Loss calculation for the issue will reflect these costs. For each Set, all the Issue's "Position" values are tabulated on the Portfolio page of the Set. Also, "Position" values are automatically recalculated after each download of price data.
4.) Notes:
Use this area to store personal information and ideas about the issue. You may annotate your targets for the "up side" and your "stop loss" price level for the trade. The privacy screen covers this area when active.
5.) Use the blue square button with the gold triangle in the upper left corner of the Issue graph page to navigate to any Set and its issues. Selecting a Set's name will navigate you to its portfolio page, otherwise selecting an issue within the Set's menu will take you to the issue's graph.
Graphs
1.) Re-scaling Price Graph
The Dollar axis (vertical) of the issue graph can be scaled (from level 1(narrowest) to level 5(widest) range) by means of the "Dollar" ($) button on the bottom left corner of the graph. Likewise the Time axis (horizontal) of the issue graph can be scaled (1 to 5) by means of the "Clock" button on the bottom left corner of the graph. In this case, scale 1 displays 20 data points and scale 5 displays up to 320 data points.
2.) Warning Bars - Setting and Types:
Click on the square "Graph" button, in the upper right corner of the issue graph, to activate or remove the Warning Bar (a gold price line reflecting a critical dollar value). Then drag the Warning Bar to the desired dollar value (price level for a warning). The pink text area adjacent to the "Graph" button, in the upper right, dynamically indicates the event ("Rising above" or "Falling below" the price level) that will generate a "warning".
Alternatively, you can click on the pink text area (left of the "Graph" button) to enter a value from you keyboard, which can be outside the visible range of the graph. When the Current or Daily price line crosses the Warning Bar in the direction selected ("Rising above" or "Falling below") a warning will be generated thereby (a) changing the color of the issue's text line, in the Issue List, to yellow, (b) the name of the Issue will be added to the "Warnings" menu and (c) a verbal warning will be spoken, if the Voice Warning option is on.
There are three types of Warning Bars (gold arrow left, gold arrow up and gold arrow down) to define the event that will generate a warning. The three types can be selected sequentially by clicking on the gold arrow head at the end of the Warning Bar. The default setting, with the gold arrow pointing left, is sensitive to the Daily position of the last traded price line relative to the Warning Bar. Note that the "Daily position" refers to all the Current price data displayed on the issue graph ( use the highest "Time" axis scale available, to view the full Current price range of the issue). In other words, if the last traded line crosses the Warning Bar at any time, in the direction as stated, regardless of whether it comes back through the Bar later in the opposite direction, the Warning Bar function will return a warning, and will continue to do so in subsequent downloads until you either remove or reposition the Warning Bar. Therefore, if you are not at your computer through the day, and during that time the last traded line rises above and then drops back through the Warning Bar horizon , TickerTracker™ will still report a warning for that issue to alert you of that change during the day. This assumes the warning was set for when the Daily position "rises above" the Warning Bar price level.
Otherwise, the Warning Bar function can be set to be sensitive to only the latest Current price data (as opposed to all the data available on the Current price line). Rather than determining the issue price movement, by comparison with all the price values on the graph, as the Warning Bar does in the "Daily" mode; the gold arrow can be toggled between the "Current Price Rises above" and "Current Price Falls below" to allow you to monitor the direction of only the latest Current price.
In the "Current" mode, the Warning Bar will return a warning only if the last download shows a Current Price value which lies on the opposite side of the Warning Bar in the direction specified by the gold Warning Bar arrow. In other words, if you set the Warning Bar to go off in the event an Issue price Rises above 20, and the Current price as of the last download is 20.5, then a warning will be returned. If the price drops back to 19.5, the warning will not be returned, since the last Current Price is below the warning level.
Note:
Current Price in the issue graph is the "last traded at" price of an Issue.
Warning Bar settings are sensitive to the "Current Price" line of the graphed data, the accuracy of which is dependent on the frequency of downloads (i.e. data available). If an issue price anomaly should occur between downloads (i.e.: a price spike), and therefore is not reflected on the graph, the warning function in the Current mode will obviously not be capable of responding to that event.
3.) Price Levels and Profit/Loss estimates:
When analyzing a price trend, click and hold the mouse down on any area in an Issue's graph, and TickerTracker™ will display the price at that point on the graph, as well as calculate the Profit/Loss resulting from trading at that price.
Analysis Graphs
Four types of graphic analysis of the issue data can be selected by means of the small PopUp menu at the top right of the Analysis Graph display. The ROC-Price and the Stochastics graphs are a function of the Analysis Graphs: Period setting as selected in the Settings & Preferences page (see formulas below).
1.) Rate of Change in Price (ROC - Price)
The Rate of Change indicator measures the pace at which an issue's price is changing.
Formula: 100*((P1-P2)/P2), where P1 = price of the issue and P2 = price of the issue, as recorded 'X' number of periods ago. The 'X' value is set via the "Analysis Graphs: Periods" PopUp menu on the SetUp page.
Positive readings indicate the price is rising and conversely, negative readings indicate that the price is falling.
2.) On Balance Volume (OBV)
The OBV is based on the theory that volume activity is directly proportional to the direction of the true trend of a market.
Formula:
If Cp is above PCp then OBV = PCv + Lv
If Cp is below PCp then OBV = PCv - Lv
If Cp = PCp then OBV = PCv
where
OBV = On Balance Volume
Cp = Current Price (last traded at)
PCp = Previous Current Price
PCv = Previous total cumulative volume
Lv = Latest volume
The intraday values of the OBV line are volatile. You may smooth the OBV with a nine (9) period simple moving average by selecting that option on the Settings & Prefs page.
When OBV is on a rising trend, it is generally a bullish sign even if the price declines a little. When OBV is falling, even during short term price rallies, this is a bearish sign.
3.) Stochastics
This indicator is based on the theory that prices that are heading higher usually trade closer to the high than the low, and the reverse is true for prices that are heading lower.
Formula:
Raw Value = ((Last Price - Low in period)/(High in period-Low in period))*100
New %K = (Previous %K*2/3)+(Raw Value/3) - Blue line
New %D = (Previous %D*2/3)+(New %K/3) - Red line
The period is determined by "Analysis Graphs: Periods", as selected in the SetUp and Preferences page.
If no previous value exists for %K, then a value of 50% is used.
Stochastics is "oversold" when %K (blue) is under 25 and crossed over and above %D (red).
Stochastics is "overbought" when %K (blue) is above 75 and crossed over and under %D (red).
4.) Price Variance
This indicator calculates the percentage change of the last traded price (current) from the price on the Dollar (vertical) axis of the issue graph. As you change the scale (1 to 5) on the "Time" axis, the indicator measures the range of price variance.
Formula: 100*((P1-P2)/P2), where P1 = latest price of the issue and P2 = price of the issue at the vertical axis of the graph.

Portfolio (page)
1.) Calculations
Cumulative Portfolio calculations are updated after each download and prior to going to the Portfolio page.
2.) Privacy Feature:
TickerTracker™ will not allow you to access the Portfolio Page without having entered your password (once per session), either at the Issue graph page, or before navigating to the Portfolio Page.
3.) Portfolio List sorting
As with the main Issue List page, the Portfolio lists may be sorted by any of their column headings. To sort by a heading, just click on the column title and the listing will sorted by that parameter.
4.) You may use the "Graph" button to display a graph of the percentage change in the value of your portfolio.
5.) The "Left Arrow" and "Right Arrow" buttons at the top right of the Portfolio Page allows you to navigate from one portfolio to another.
6.) Use the red square button with the gold triangle in the upper left corner of the Portfolio page to navigate to any Set and its issues. Selecting a Set's name will navigate you to its portfolio page otherwise selecting an issue within the Set's menu will take you to the issue's graph.
Helpful Hints
1.) If used unattended, leave TickerTracker™ as the front application and use 'Okey Dokey'.
2.) Download Time
The duration of the download is proportional to the total number of issues in the Indexes, Portfolio and Watching lists. The SetUp performs a rough calculation and estimates the daily CompuServe time consumption. Since CompuServe rounds up their connection time calculations, it is most economical to find the number of Issues, through experimentation, that will produce download times that are just under 60 seconds or just under 120 seconds etc.
3.) Where can I find Apple Modem Tool and PlainTalk™
Apple Modem Tool, Express Modem Tool, and PlainTalk™ extensions are available through CompuServe's Apple Support Forum (GO APLSUP)
4.) As the size of the export files grow over time, you should allocate approximately twenty(20) times the size of the export file to the memory requirements of TickerTracker™ via "Get Info" in the finder's "file" menu. The maximum size of an export file is 11K times (x) the number of tickers downloaded and you should allocate more memory(RAM) to TickerTracker™ if you are having problems importing the data files.
Known Conflicts:
1.) Fax software
Some older versions of FAX stf software (STF Technologies Inc.), cause the modem to hang up immediately after it has connect. We are looking into this problem, but for now the only solution seems to be turning off the fax software, which is some cases involves removing it completely from your system's folder and rebooting.

You may upload a DEMO version of TickerTracker™ to any bulletin board, ftp site, or other software repository, under the provision the complete folder without edits, deletions or additions is uploaded. If you wish to distribute TickerTracker™ on a CD-ROM, or other collection of software, you must obtain the author's permission in writing. You may not, in any case, distribute a modified or an unlocked copy of TickerTracker™.
